Season 5 is when they deviated from the books and lost quality material. The dorne plot was horrible. In fact, almost every plot was bad except Hardhome. Stannis's character was treated as a joke too and he was a book favourite. All in all, I think the reason season 5 and 6 get a pass for being bad is because they had individually great episodes.
